In October 2019 I led a small-group photo tour in the wonderful area of the Dolomites in Italy. In the past I used to stay in the small village of St Peter, which was very convenient for accessing popular photographic spots such as Santa Maddalena and St Johan. And although the village was convenient for these locations, it was convenient for accessing the Alpe di Siusi area, which is closed to all visitors apart from people who stay at the hotels in that area.
So, for 2019 I took the decision to stay at a superb hotel in Alpe di Siusi which offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Almost every good photographic spot was within 30 minutes walk from the hotel, although one day we had setup our tripods right outside the hotel.
The spot I captured this photograph was within 15 minutes walk from the hotel. The weather was not promising as there was cloud in the sky. However, during sunset and out of nowhere, there was a gap in the clouds which allowed the last rays of sun to touch the top of the surrounding hills.
What a treat, what an inspirational sunset, what an amazing memory.
