Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls, is a true gem of the country’s south coast. Plunging 60 metres (197 feet) from the cliffs of the former coastline, this powerful cascade creates an immense curtain of water that can be heard and felt long before it comes into view.
What makes Skógafoss particularly special is its perfect symmetry and immense width of 25 metres (82 feet). On sunny days, the constant mist generated by the waterfall often produces vivid rainbows, adding to its enchanting beauty. The contrast between the roaring white water and the lush green surroundings in summer—or the icy, snow-covered landscape in winter—makes for a truly captivating sight.
A well-maintained staircase runs alongside the waterfall, leading to a viewing platform at the top. From here, visitors can admire the dramatic drop of Skógafoss and take in sweeping views of the Skógá River as it winds through the highlands towards the coast. The area is also the starting point of the famous Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail, which leads adventurers through a spectacular landscape of glaciers, lava fields, and rugged terrain between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull ice caps.
At the base of the waterfall, a shallow pool forms where visitors can walk close to the cascading water—though they should be prepared to get soaked by the relentless spray. According to Icelandic folklore, a Viking settler hid a treasure chest behind the waterfall, and while the chest has never been found, Skógafoss remains a true treasure of Iceland’s natural wonders.
