Northumberland photo workshop

Lindsfarne-Castle-Sunrise-8089The aim of this workshop is to learn everything about long exposure seascape photography, as well as enhancing your skills on composition, focusing and exposure techniques.

The foundation of this photo workshop is based on tuition and inspiration. The small group of only four participants will allow plenty of time for individual attention by the tutor, making sure you learn and photograph the area under the best light and supervision possible.

Our workshop will be carried out along Northumberland’s coastline. We will have the chance to photograph Bamburgh bay, Budle Bay, Embleton Bay and so on. We will also take a drive over the causeway to visit the Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle, where we will spend as much time as the tide will allow us. Lindisfarne Castle, the old priory, St Mary`s church, the old boat houses, Emmanuel head and many more locations are on our list.

The Location

St-Mary's-Lighthouse,--Northumberland,-England-6029Dramatic views, sandy beaches and iconic castles - this is the essence of Northumberland's coast.

From mountainous moorland and heather-clad hills, to ancient woodland, rocky cliffs, sweeping sands and expansive mudflats, Northumberland is a county of diverse habitats, rare species and breeding colonies of international significance.

The area of Northumberland, with all its magical castles, magnificent beaches with sand, pebbles or weathered rocks, winding rivers, National Parks and vast moors or sand dunes is definitely one of the most beautiful areas on the British isles. Just the idea of witnessing a sunrise by the feet of Bamburgh castle or Dunstanburgh castle is enough to bring shivers to your spine.

Northumberland was for centuries the scene of bitter border conflicts, and today it has more castles and peel towers than any other English county. These are the scars and reminders of that era. Alnwick and Bamburgh castles are the main stars here as they both have featured in countless films.

Equipment requirements

Camera and lenses
Please make sure you know how to use your camera or at least the basic functions – make sure you bring the camera's manual along with you. Focal length of wide angle to 300mm will be adequate.

A sturdy tripod is strongly recommended. If you need advice on purchasing a tripod, we recommend the Manfrotto 055 or similar. If you own a low budget light aluminium tripod such as Jessops and you are wondering if it is good enough, no, it is not. It will not allow you to trust your gear on it and it will not allow us to help you with tuition.

ND Grad filters
Neutral Density Graduated filters are highly recommended for balancing exposure difference between land and sky. We recommend a 1.5 stop hard and a 3 stop soft (if you are just starting with filters). Full instruction can be given during the workshop to help you with the correct use of filters.

ND filter
To get the very best out of your images and the locations, we suggest that you bring a good Neutral Density filter with you such as the Lee Little Stopper or Big Stopper for long exposures.

Shutter release cable
You will need one for longer than 30 seconds exposures.

Warm and weatherproof clothing and neoprene wellies is a must as the weather can be very unpredictable. ☀ ☁ ❄.

We also encourage you to bring some digital files of your previous work as there might be opportunities to discuss your portfolio and supply you with beneficial feedback.

Although all 'Inspiring Photography Workshops' clients are covered by our public liability insurance, we recommend that you take your own travel insurance also.
