Slioch Mountain, Wester Ross, Scotland

Slioch, a prominent mountain in the Scottish Highlands, is located in Wester Ross, approximately eight kilometres north of the village of Kinlochewe. Rising to an elevation of 981 metres, Slioch stands majestically above the southeastern end of Loch Maree, offering one of the most iconic and frequently photographed vistas in the Highlands, particularly from the A832 road. Its commanding presence and striking profile make it a favourite among photographers.

The mountain is geologically distinctive. It is composed primarily of Torridonian sandstone resting on a base of ancient Lewisian Gneiss. Its dramatic structure features steep crags on three sides, creating a rugged and imposing appearance. Access is relatively straightforward only from the southeast, where the expansive corrie of Coire na Sleaghaich provides a natural gateway. This corrie is flanked by two ridges, which serve as the primary routes for ascending the mountain.

The name ‘Slioch’ derives from the Gaelic word ‘sleagh’, meaning ‘the spear’. This name becomes particularly evident when the mountain is viewed from Lochan Fada to the west. From this perspective, the subsidiary peak of Sgurr an Tuill Bhain (Peak of the White Hollow), standing at 933 metres, emerges as a slender, spear-like summit. This distinctive feature not only gives the mountain its name but also adds to its dramatic and picturesque character.

Slioch’s combination of geological grandeur, historical significance, and breathtaking views makes it a standout destination in the Scottish Highlands. Whether admired from afar or experienced up close, the mountain embodies the rugged beauty and timeless allure of this remarkable landscape.
