Photo tour in the Lofoten islands of Norway

Intro

Uttakleiv,-Lofoten-Islands,-Norway-5010010Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. The Lofoten Islands are draped across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. This rare wilderness outpost offers a breathtaking landscape of majestic mountains, deep fjords and a multi complex set of islands, many of them connected via bridge or causeway. If you are seeking an unforgettable photographic experience, Lofoten will definitely not let you down.

Haukland-Beach,-Lofoten-Islands,-Norway-5050015Between the mainland and the Lofoten lies the open Vestfjord. The archipelago is known for its exceptional natural beauty, the picturesque fishing settlements, the Rorbu (fishermen's cottages) and the stockfish. Due to the Gulf Stream the climate is mild, despite the latitude north of the Arctic Circle. Between May 25 and July 17 you can experience the Midnight Sun, and from early May the nights are bright.

The tourist season begins in summer – typically June till August – with a major number of visitors. Yet, it is the other seasons that offer the most in terms of experience. Only then you can truly see the beauty of this wild and exotic corner of the Earth. We chose the month of May because the sun hardly goes below the horizon at this time of year. This guarantees plenty of twilight photography and, if we are lucky to experience colourful skies, the colour stays there for hours.

Equipment requirements

Camera and lenses
Please make sure you know how to use your camera or at least the basic functions – make sure you bring the camera's manual along with you. Focal length of wide angle to 300mm will be adequate.

Tripod
A sturdy tripod is strongly recommended. If you need advice on purchasing a tripod, we recommend the Manfrotto 055 or similar. If you own a low budget light aluminium tripod such as Jessops and you are wondering if it is good enough, no, it is not. It will not allow you to trust your gear on it and it will not allow us to help you with tuition.

ND Grad filters
Neutral Density Graduated filters are highly recommended for balancing exposure difference between land and sky. We recommend a 1.5 stop hard and a 3 stop soft (if you are just starting with filters). Full instruction can be given during the workshop to help you with the correct use of filters.

ND filter
To get the very best out of your images and the locations, we suggest that you bring a good Neutral Density filter with you such as the Lee Little Stopper or Big Stopper for long exposures.

Shutter release cable
You will need one for longer than 30 seconds exposures.

Clothing
Warm and weatherproof clothing and neoprene wellies (if possible) is a must as the weather can be quite cold this time of year, especially during twilight times that we will be photographing. Temperatures can range from -2 to +13. ☀ ☁ ❄.

We also encourage you to bring some digital files of your previous work as there might be opportunities to discuss your portfolio and supply you with beneficial feedback.

Insurance

Although all 'Inspiring Photography Workshops' clients are covered by our public liability insurance, we recommend that you take your own travel insurance also.
